LODHRAN: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday issued a notice to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spearhead Imran Khan over a code of conduct violation.
PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Murad Saeed, Ali Tareen and Awami Muslim League (AML) Chairman Shaikh Rasheed were also issued notices by the ECP for addressing a rally in Lodhran’s NA-145 constituency days before the by-polls, despite the commission asking the political leaders to refrain from attempting such a move.
According to the code of conduct, none of the lawmakers, government ministers or any person on their behalf shall visit the constituency or a polling station after the issuance of schedule of by-election till the completion of poll.
The commission has given Khan and other respective leaders until February 11 to provide a response on the matter.
On Friday, ECP had directed Khan that he must refrain from participating in a rally that would be conducted as part of party’s pre-election campaign for NA-154 by-poll.
The District Returning Officer wrote a letter to the PTI chief asking him not to attend today’s rally in Lodhran as it is in violation of the law. He cited a clause in the ECP’s code of conduct that bars lawmakers and government ministers to visit the constituencies after the issuance of schedule of a by-poll.
